Hispanic Media Trends
Inspired by a statistic cited in a January 2009 Newsweek article entitled, "Why We Must Invest in Our Latinos," which states there are roughly eight Latino births for every death, in this issue of Global Communicator, our language focus is Spanish. Our two articles, including this one, will arm you with statistics and sources about this growing demographic – helping to demonstrate why more businesses and organizations are translating their materials, websites, forms, etc. into Spanish.
Hispanic Media Data
As the Hispanic population continues to grow, so does the number of Hispanic media outlets ready to serve Latino communities across the U.S. The following are some key facts about Hispanic media in the U.S.
- There are 11 Associated Press-style wire services and news syndicates serving U.S. Hispanic media outlets.
- There are more than 250 Hispanic TV stations and shows in the United States and Puerto Rico.
- There are more than 650 Hispanic radio stations and shows in the United States and Puerto Rico.
- There are 762 Hispanic newspapers, magazines, and newsletters in the United States and Puerto Rico. This figure only includes print media that publish editorial-related content.
- Univision Communications Inc. is the largest Spanish-language media company in the United States. Its operations include Univision Network, the most-watched Spanish-language broadcast television network in the U.S. reaching 98 percent of U.S. Hispanic households.
- The average age of readers of Hispanic newspapers is 33.5.
