According to 2007 U.S. Census numbers, among the 20 largest metro areas more than half of all people over age five speak a language other than English at home. In Hialeah, Florida and Laredo, Texas, more than nine-in-10 people age five and older speak a foreign language at home – the highest such proportion among U.S. places of 100,000 population or more. The 10 places with the highest proportions include four cities in Texas.

There are at least 224 languages spoken in California by some estimates. 2006 U.S. Census data reveals that in Los Angeles County alone, there are nineteen languages spoken by 15,000 or more people – Spanish, Tagalog, Chinese, Korean, Armenian, Vietnamese, Persian, Japanese, Cantonese, Russian, French, Mandarin, Arabic, Khmer, German, Formosan, Thai, Italian, and Hebrew.
