Armenian Fast Facts
Armenian is the official language of the Republic of Armenia, as well as of Nagorno-Karabakh, which is a part of Azerbaijan. It is estimated that there are 6.5 to seven million Armenian speakers worldwide; of which approximately half reside in Armenia. The Armenian language has been influenced by many other world languages including Iranian and French.

- A former republic of the Soviet Union, Armenia is one of the oldest and most historic civilizations in the world, as well as the first nation to adopt Christianity as its official religion. Although Armenia is constitutionally a secular state, the Christian faith plays a major role in its history.
- The Armenian economy's competitiveness is low and stagnating according to the Global Competitiveness Index, in which Armenia's ranking slipped from 80th out of 132 countries in the 2006-2007 index to 93rd out of 131 countries in the 2007-2008 index (just below Libya, Namibia, Georgia, Serbia, and Pakistan).
- As of 2007, just fewer than six percent of Armenia’s population had Internet access. However, the projected growth in Internet users from 2000-2008 is 486 percent. (Internet World Statistics, 2007)
- The mobile market grew by around 75% in 2007, with K-Telecom, Armenia’s second mobile operator, having a big impact on the market. Plans to award a third mobile operator license were announced in late 2007. (Central Asia Telecom Report, 2008)
- Armenia is a landlocked country approximately the size of Maryland. It is bordered by Turkey, Georgia, Iran, and Azerbaijan.
- The key industries include diamond-processing, metal-cutting machine tools, forging-pressing machines, electric motors, tires, knitted wear, hosiery, shoes, silk fabric, chemicals, trucks, instruments, microelectronics, jewelry manufacturing, software development, food processing, and brandy. Armenia’s key exports are pig iron, unwrought copper, nonferrous metals, diamonds, and mineral products. (CIA World Factbook, 2008)
