Portuguese Speakers Online

Portuguese is in the top 10 languages spoken as far as number of speakers - representing good potential for marketing to new customer online. Below is an overview of the Internet markets (in terms of users and growth percentages) for Brazil and Portugal.

Brazil
Brazil dominates the Latin American Internet market in terms of user numbers. According to Internet World Statistics, over 42 million Brazilians were logging on to the Internet in 2007; representing 22.8% percent of its total population. In terms of penetration, it occupies approximately the third place, behind Uruguay and Chile and slightly ahead of Argentina. Since 2002, Brazil has experienced a growing migration from dial-up to broadband. While virtually all cable TV companies offer cable modem services, ADSL is the access technology of choice, accounting for 84% of the country's broadband market.

Portugal
Portugal's Internet penetration in early 2006 is high even by European standards. Broadband take-up is also considerably above the European Union (EU) average. According to Internet World Statistics, nearly 8 million Portuguese were logging on to the Internet in 2007; representing 73% percent of its total population.
